Limited DNA testing at Pheasant Wood
The British and Australian governments have agreed to test the efficacy of applying DNA technology at Pheasant Wood. If successful Warren Snowdon MP has indicated, the authorities might then test the balance of the remains to match them with living relatives. Since the Department of Defence which is supposed to collect information about soldiers who participated in the Battle of Fromelles and maintain a register of relatives, is apparently turning people away on the basis of arbitrarily narrowing the field of candidates who might have been buried by the Germans, one must question the Federal Government's resolve "to identify each individual soldier", particularly when it has been so reluctant to consult the Australian public or to establish a system of voluntary DNA sampling.
